All in a day's networking

We had a stimulating day of meetings today. Just as well after a coffee-less 5am start!

It began with the quarterly Exeter Initiative for Science and Technology gathering - the first event at the stunning HPC Complex next to the beast that is the new Met Office supercomputer. The theme was climate change, specifically, opportunities for businesses in mitigating its effects. Speakers included:

  • The Met Office's Vicky Pope talking about Met Office (big) data initiatives, how it is helping to manage weather-related risks and opportunities so business can operate safely, efficiently and profitably
  • Glenn Woodcock from Exeter City Futures, who presented a roadmap to energy independence
  • Paul Hewson, City Science, talking about how we might create more efficient transport systems
  • Simon Notley of Dynniq, on what is required to transform cities into Smart Cities

You can see the recording here.

It certainly helped to understand the forces behind the undeniable and impressive explosion of Exeter onto the global applied environmental stage, and what it might mean for neighbouring districts such as Mid Devon.

We then moved over the bridge to the Ashfords 'Arabella' event which - appropriately, just after International Women's Day - celebrates women in business. Today's speaker was the impressive Lucy Green, an award-winning retail leader with more than 20 years' experience with brands like Armani, Valentino, Calvin Klein, The White Company and Thomas Cook. Now a Consultant to Charlotte Tilbury Beauty she mentioned she'd like to enter the food industry.

Hmm...we have an idea. Watch this space: networking at its best!
